11 Jan 2009, 0448 hrs IST, TNN

GUMLA (JHARKHAND): A local resistance group bore the brunt of Maoist reprisal on Saturday when two of its members in Anjan village were shot dead
by Naxals who ransacked the homes of two others, including that of the group's chief. Vijay Nayak and Charku Nayak were members of Shanti Sena, formed by villagers in Gumla district of Jharkhand with police help to oppose the Maoists.

Police said about 40 to 50 uniformed Maoists cadres arrived in the village, about 16 km from Gumla town, at 6 am. They shot dead Vijay and Charku when the two were on their way home from a nearby field.

They also ransacked the houses of village Shanti Sena chief Satyanarayan Thakur and another Sena member Rampyare. The Maoists also set a motorcycle on fire.

Shanti Sena was set up in Anjan village three years ago with the support of police. Some sena members were also given guns to fight the Maoists who had made the village their den.
