GULBARGA: A group of Muslims on Friday attacked the office of the Kannada daily Samyukta Karnataka here and assaulted the staff. Three employees of the newspaper were severely injured. The assailants were protesting against a report on the head of a local dargah.

The daily’s circulation manager Vilas Deshpande, who suffered serious head injuries, has been admitted to the Government General Hospital, and his condition stated to be serious.

Executive Editor of the newspaper Srikantacharya Mannur, who was an eyewitness to the incident, said that about 15 persons shouting slogans against the newspapers started assaulting the staff in the front office where the circulation and advertisement departments functioned.

The mob tried to storm into the editorial and the computer room before the other staff pushed them out of the main door.

“We were taken by surprise at the attack and initially we were not aware of the reason for the attack and nobody in the crowd was in a position to hear us. Nobody told us why they were protesting,” Mr. Mannur said.

The mob damaged a four-wheeler that belonged to the daily and damaged the vehicles parked in front of the newspaper office before being chased away by the police. The police picked up seven persons in connection with the attack from a building in front of the newspaper office.

Senior officials, including the Superintendent of Police Padmanayan, visited newspaper office and inspected the damage.

The news about the attack on the newspaper office spread and tension prevailed in some parts of the city. Journalists protesting against the attack staged a “rasta roko” agitation at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Chowk. Many organisations, including the Kannada Rakshana Vedike, joined the protest by the journalists. Communist Party of India (Marxist) State Secretariat member Maruti Manpade condemned the attack.

Muslims staged a protest demonstration in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office in the city demanding action against the newspaper for publishing a report which had hurt their religious sentiments.

In a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner, the signatories said: “The newspaper had published indecent allegations and used vulgar words against the Honorable Shaikh Tajuddin Junaidi, Sajjada Nasheen of the Dargah of famous saint Sirajuddin Junaidi, who is known as Shaik-e-Deccan.”

The memorandum said “the paper has printed (the report) without any validity and (regard for) the rules of publishing” and demanded the closure of the newspaper. The senior officials who met the protesters at the Deputy Commissioner’s office said that they would look into the complaint and take action. The officials rejected the demand that the police should release those picked up in connection with the violence at the newspaper’s office.

Karnataka Union Working of Journalists has decided to take out a procession protesting against the attack on Samyukta Karnataka on Saturday and demand protection to newspapers and journalists.

Pakistan madrassa used as bomb-making factory, Blast occurs,16 killed, 120 injured

Jul 13, 2009, Islamabad

At least 16 people, including several children, were killed and 120 others injured on Monday when a powerful explosion in a small village in Pakistan’s Punjab province flattened a madrassa, which was being used to make bombs, officials said.

The blast, which occurred shortly before 10 am local time in the village near Mian Channu in southern Punjab, was caused by explosives stored in the home of madrassa teacher Riaz Ali, local residents said.

Ali was a member of a banned religious group, officials said.

Police and rescue service officials told reporters that 16 people, including several children, were killed in the blast, which also destroyed dozens of houses.

Muhammad Yousuf Soomra, health officer of Khanewal district, said the toll could rise as more bodies were feared to be buried under the rubble of collapsed homes.

It was not immediately known what triggered the blast. Rescue workers found parts of shells and bombs, grenades, rockets and suicide jackets in the rubble of the madrassa.

Officials said the seminary was being used to make bombs.

Doctors in local hospitals said 120 injured people had been brought for treatment. Over 40 of them were admitted to hospitals while many were allowed to go home after being given first aid. An emergency was declared in all hospitals near Mian Channu.

‘Jehadi’ material, including cassettes with militant propaganda and pamphlets of the Harkat-ul-Jehad al-Islami terrorist group, were also found in the debris of Ali’s house, Geo News channel reported.

The blast created a crater 40 feet wide and eight feet deep. The explosion flattened about 25 structures, including a rural health centre and the madrassa, a police official said.

Rescue efforts were hampered by large crowds that gathered at the site of the blast. The lack of earth moving equipment also affected efforts by rescue workers to sift through the rubble.

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani condemned the blast and ordered authorities to launch an immediate inquiry into the incident so that the culprits could be brought to justice.

MAJOR COMMUNAL RIOT IN MURSHIDABAD, 12 HINDU DEAD, HUNDREDS INJURED INCLUDING ONE DEPUTY SUPERINTENDENT OF POLICE

10th July 2009, a major communal riot  broke in Murshidabad district.
Till now 12 persons dead, most of them Hindus,  hundreds injured including 10
policemen and one D.S.P. rank police officer. Two  village markets and
hundreds of Hindu houses were looted and burnt. Firing  between police and Muslim
rioters still going on at 11.30 night. Curfew imposed  in the whole area.
BSF and CRPF deployed to help police and  RAF.
Perhaps the whole incident planned to welcome the proposed Aligarh Muslim
University Campus in this district.
Jhaubona High  School is a big higher secondary school in  Jhaubona village
under Nawda polie station in Beldanga sub division in  Murshidabad
district. Among total 1000 students of this school, about 50% are  Muslim students.
For long they were demanding to offer Friday Namaz inside the  school. But
school management and the Hindu students resisted it apprehending that it
will create a virtual mosque inside the school.  So, the furious Muslim
students  made objection against Saraswati Puja in the school and the school
management  has been compelled to stop Saraswati puja last year in the school. In
spite of  that, the Muslim students were not satisfied. So they planned to
offer Friday  Namaz today (10 July) by force inside the school without any
permission from Head Master or School  Management. Hindu students protested
and altercation started at 12  noon between two groups of students. Muslims
were prepared. Through cell phone  they spread the false message that Hindu
students attacked Muslim students in  the school. Within 10-15 minutes,
thousands of Muslims led by the  students of nearby Trimohini Madrasa rushed to
the school. They attacked the  school students, the big village market of
Trimohini, and two Hindu villages  Jhaubona and Trimohini. Many Hindu shops in
the Trimohini market were burnt and  looted. Many Hindu houses were burnt and
looted in the villages Jhaubona and  Garapara. In one house 4 Hindus died
in the fire including one father and his  daughter were burnt alive.
Till now, according to our sources, 12 Hindus are dead, more than one
hundred injured, though the district administration will surely give a lesser
number.
Many are missing. Nobody knows how many of  the missing persons are already
dead.
Police and RAF could not control the situation. So, BSF and  CRPF are
called in. Till evening, police fired 250 rounds. 10 policemen were  injured,
among them condition of 4 are very serious. One D.S.P. is seriously  injured.
He has been admitted in a private  nursing home to avoid media scrutiny. On
the road at Begunbari village, Muslims  burnt 2 buses and one matador. One
Tata Sumo car and its passengers were  attacked. The broken car and its
passengers have been brought to Beldanga Bharat  Sevashram Sangha for their
safety.
The injured persons have been admitted to  Baharampur and Amtala hospitals.
Till mid night, firing was going on between  Muslim rioters and security
forces at Trimohini bazaar.
As usual, the electronic media/ TV channels  are silent and totally blacked
out this major incident.
Murshidabad district is a Muslim majority distrct. All the 3 police
stations in Beldanga sub division – Beldanga, Nawda and Hariharpara – are Muslim
majority. This is a border sub division. All the Hindu villages  under
Nawda and Hariharpara p.s. are awake tonight. They are scared of possible
Muslim attack upon their villages.
In sub divisional town Beldanga, in evening  Muslims gathered in front of
Congress office. Hindus are fearing that the famous  Bharat Sevashram Sangha,
whose President highly revered Swami Pradiptanandaji  (Kartik Maharaj) may
be attacked by communal Muslims. Swamiji is now away from  Ashram. He went
pilgrimage to Mansarovar-Kailas. He is expected to return in 5-6  days.
India’s Finance Minister Mr.  Pranab Mukherjee has been elected from this
Murshidabad district. As a gratitude to the Muslims of this district, he
announced in his finance Budget in parliament  that he would allocate a huge
sum of money to establish a campus of Aligarh  Muslim University in this
district. This  Aligarh Muslim University spearheaded the separatist movement for
creation of  Pakistan in pre 1947 years.

Kolkata Statesman newspaper apologizes as Muslim mob goes on a rampage over article

KOLKATA, Feb. 9: More than 20 people, including four policemen, were injured in a clash that broke out when police tried to clear Lenin Sarani where Muslim agitators had put up a road block for four hours in protest against an article published in The Statesman a few days ago. Forty-four people were later arrested in connection with the attack on police and blocking traffic, said Mr Pradip Chattopadhyay, joint CP (administration).

According to police, trouble broke out around noon when the agitators tried to block CR Avenue in protest against an article ~ a comment piece ~ from The Independent that was published in The Statesman in its 5 February edition. Police chased away the mob and arrested seven people.

The agitators regrouped and blocked Lenin Sarani throwing traffic out of gear. They demonstrated in front of Statesman House and damaged a taxi, two private buses, and a tram. Commuters complained of being severely inconvenienced due to the roadblock. Some protestors forced local traders to shut down their shops and join the agitation. Long queues of vehicles were seen on either side of CR Avenue, Dorina Crossing, SN Banerjee Road due to suspension of traffic on Lenin Sarani.

Senior police officers, led by additional commissioner (I) Mr Ranjit Kumar Pachnanda, rushed to the spot and appealed to the agitators time and again to withdraw the blockade.

After agitators refused to call off the blockade, additional forces were deployed in the area. Later DC DD (I), Mr Jawed Shamim, DC (Central) Mrs Damayanti Sen, DC (Traffic) Mr Dilip Banerjee, Joint CP (Traffic) Mr Ranvir Kumar reached the spot and urged agitators to call off the blockade.

After all their pleas fell on deaf ears, leaders from some Muslim organisations and even imams of Shahi Tipu Sultan Mosque came to the spot and tried to pacify the mob. Meanwhile, Rapid Action Force and Armed Police jawans were deployed to prevent any further violence.

After several requests of police officers and religious leaders to call off the blockade went unheeded, police chased away the mob and resorted to a mild lathi-charge to clear Lenin Sarani. Demonstrators threw stones, soda bottles and shoes injuring four cops. Some agitators later took shelter in a nearby mosque and threw stones, empty bottles and shoes targeting policemen. These people later left the mosque.

The situation came under control around 5 p.m. A police picket was posted near the mosque. Later in the evening, a group of people belonging to some Muslim outfits blocked AJC Bose Road near Rajabazar for one-and-a-half hours on the same issue. The blockade was later withdrawn. In a Press release, the Indian Union Muslim Leage (West Bengal) condemned the lathi-charge on protestors and accused The Statesman of “obstinacy” with regard to issuing an apology for carrying the comment piece by Johann Hari. (In fact, The Statesman has, already expressed its deep regret if the publication of the article had caused hurt to any community or religion.)

Pamphlets call for agitation
Later in the evening, unsigned pamphlets and posters were being distributed in the Esplanade area urging members of a particular community to “continue the agitation” and stating that the “protests were not against the state government or police administration”. The pamphlets also demanded that The Statesman be “banned” and that its editor be “arrested”.

Bangalore Islamic jihadi terror attacks shows prove links between Lashkar-Indian Mujahideen
February 07, 2009

The cracking of the Bangalore serial blasts case has confirmed security agencies’ claims about Lashkar-e-Tayiba’s links with the dreaded Indian Mujahideen.

Interrogation of terror suspects revealed that they belonged to a terror module in Kerala operated by the Lashkar.

Giving more proof of the close links between the Lashkar and the IM, interrogations revealed that the cadres were constantly monitored by Riyaz Bhatkal and Abdul Subhan alias Tauqueer. While Bhatkal headed operations for the Lashkar in south India, Subhan was in charge of the Indian Mujahideen.

Abdul Sattar, one of the accused in the Bangalore blasts case, says that the orders to carry out the attack came from both Bhatkal and Subhan. The duo was in constant touch with Sattar and monitored every bit of the operation.

They even coined the code word for the Bangalore operation, Tomato Work.

The arrested men also revealed that they returned to Kerala after the Bangalore assignment and after having spent some time there were directed to leave for Kashmir. Lashkar has been constantly sending Indian Mujahideen operatives from Kerala to train in Kashmir, they added.

Their brief was to specialise in Kashmir and fight alongside the Lashkar in the Valley.

The accused disclosed that from Kerala they went to Kashmir via Hyderabad, trained there for a couple of months and then returned to Kerala.

Intelligence Bureau sources told rediff.com that the Lashkar is short-staffed for its Kashmir battle and has been constantly preparing youth from Kerala. Over the past one year, nearly 100 youth — who form part of the IM module in Kerala — have been sent to train in Kashmir.

The Lashkar finds the Kerala wing of the IM to be the most dedicated and hence has chosen its cadres for Kashmir.

All these operations in South of India were being monitored by Riyaz Bhatkal, who was also handed over additional charge of overseeing the IM when it was being set up.

Bhatkal, according to the IB, is a crucial link in the terror network. It is also said that Bhatkal was aware of the November 26 attack in Mumbai when it was being planned and helped in arranging local help.

Bhatkal, who originally was an underworld operative, was handpicked by the Lashkar for its south-based operations. The IB says that the Lashkar was impressed with his dedication.

Besides, Bhatkal shared a good relationship with IM mastermind Abdul Subhan and guided him in all the operations.

Both Bhatkal and Subhan are missing and a massive manhunt has been launched for the duo. While Subhan is believed to be hiding in Pakistan, Bhatkal, according to security agencies, is in the Gulf.

IB sources say that nabbing both these men would be crucial to several terror-related probes.
