Terrorists free Turkish couple for being Muslims, but kill the non Muslims |
|
28 Nov 2008, 0237 hrs IST, Clara Lewis & Anahita Mukherji, TNN MUMBAI: When faced with a volley of gunshots, while sipping coffee at the Oberoi Hotel on Wednesday night, Ali Arpaciouglu, a Turkish citizen on a business trip to Mumbai, chose to escape through the hotel kitchen and down a flight of stairs that opened onto the road outside. This was probably one of the best decisions he took. On the other hand, his business partner, Meltem Muezzinoglu, and her husband, Seyfi, both Turks, when faced with the same situation, decided to dash out of the restaurant and head upstairs instead. When terrorists laid siege to the hotel, the Muezzinoglus were held hostage. “I was in the Indian restaurant at the Oberoi on Wednesday night, when we heard a couple of gunshots. This was followed by another round of shots,” said Arpaciouglu. Diners ducked under their seats in panic. “One of the hotel staff, a lady whose hand had been wounded in the firing, led a group of us to safety. Though she was bleeding, she took charge of the situation, and led us out of the restaurant, to safety.” The Muezzinoglus, however, found themselves in a hostage situation, along with a group of foreigners. That night, they shared a room with three foreigners - all women. Two machine-gun-wielding terrorists stood guard over them the whole night. All the hostages were asked to reveal their religion. When the Muezzinoglus said they were Muslims, their captors told them that they would not be harmed. The other three Caucasian women were removed from the room next day, and the terrorists informed the Muezzinoglus that they had been shot. Arpaciouglu kept in touch with his friends all through the hostage crisis, up until the time they were released the next day. While the hostages allowed the couple to make one phone call to Arpaciouglu at 3am, for the rest of the day, they relied on text messages. The couples’ final messages read: `Soldiers are here now. Soldiers found us’. Arpaciouglu said, “I hope I’ll never have to relive this experience.” http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/3766609.cms |

Islamic rule in India soon : Shahi Imam |
Using a rostrum overlooking the majestic Red Fort, the Shahi Imam of Delhi's grand old Jama Masjid today hit out at the principal political rivals of the United Democratic Front (UDF) he has floated ahead of Assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh while challenging the charge that Islam breeds terrorists. ''I can say with authority that it is not any Muslim but the Shiv Sena, the RSS and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad who are responsible for the serial blasts in Mumbai,'' Imam Syed Ahmed Bukhari told a gathering inside the historic mosque. He cited the recent Sena backlash against the defilement of a statue of the late wife of the party chief as evidence that the Saffron forces were desperate to politically revive themselves in Maharashtra. The Imam was of the opinion that Muslim men were being blamed for ''every'' terrorist outrage as part of a deep rooted conspiracy. Community members were being harassed by law enforcing agencies in Mumbai in the wake of the serial blasts even though they had ''no role in the anti-Islamic outrages'', he said, slamming the Congress Governments in Maharashtra and at the Centre. ''Why is it that security forces blame the Lashkar-e-Toiba within ten minutes of a blast. If they already know who did it, why don't they go ahead and arrest the culprits well before the crime is done,'' he asked. He said he was willing to visit Pakistan and ''talk'' to the LeT commanders if he was given proof of its involvement in terrorist incidents in India. ''If they are responsible then we will talk to them, tell them that they do more harm to the cause of Islam and to Muslims in India through their actions''. Imam Bukhari said he was worried that while real culprits went scot free and trigerred more blasts, ordinary Muslims were becoming terror suspects in the eyes of the people and the police. ''Every bearded man becomes a suspect'', he said. Charging the security forces with perpetrating excesses on Muslims, he said terrorism could not be wiped out in such a manner. ''If you want to end terrorism, then you would also have to end State terrorism''. ''The Government should handle the issue of terrorism tactfully. We want equality before the law'', he said, alleging that the ''yardstick'' was different when it concerned violence perpetrated by Maoists and insurgent groups in the North-East. He hit out at the Congress and the Samajwadi Party, saying these ''so-called secular parties'' were to blame for all the ills afflicting Muslims today. ''When Muslims get targeted under these so called secular parties, it is time we teach them a lesson. It is time Shias, Sunnis, Ansaris, Saifis, Barelvis, Qureshis and all else stand up as one -- as Muslims -- and snatch back our collective rights and dignity,'' the Imam said, asking the community to stand up to the political challenge. ''We were rulers here for 800 years. Inshaallah, we shall return to power here once again'', he said to loud approval by the nearly 200 assembled men. http://news.webindia123.com/news/art...18/394446.html

Clerics meet in Azamgarh, put MPs on notice Muslim clerics on Monday held a conclave in Azamgarh district on the arrests and killing of community youth by police in connection with the recent serial blasts, sending the political parties into a frenzy. The Ulema Council organised Ajimoshaan Ehtazazi Ijlaas-e-Aam, a gathering of clerics from across the country, who resolved to teach a lesson to those who are now calling Azamgarh ?Atankgarh? in the wake of the arrests and killing of several young men from the dictrict by the police, in connection with the recent blasts. In a blow to parties who went to the homes of Muslim families in Sanjarpur village whose sons had either been killed or arrested, the clerics cautioned the three MPs connected to Azamgarh Akbar Ahmad Dumpy (BSP MP from Azamgarh), Iliyas Azmi (BSP MP from Shahbad) and Abu Azmi (Rajya Sabha member from the SP) and said they would not be allowed entry if they failed to get their message of outrage across to Parliament. The clerics also decided to lodge 250 cases against BJP MP from Azamgarh Yogi Adityanath, accusing him of turning the district into a cauldron of communal violence. The main speaker at the conclave, Abdul Wahab, maintained Muslims have nothing to do with terrorism. They are equal partners in the country and those who treat them as tennants should check themselves as early as possible. Muslim Political Council, Delhi, chief Dr Taslim Rehmani went to the extent of equating Nathuram Godse and Sardar Patel to terrorists. The first terrorist of independent India was Nathuram Godse, while Sardar Patel was the second, he reportedly said. Mufti Abdul Kalam claimed that it was at the behest of Israel that atrocities were being perpetrated against Muslims in the country. The gathering where a crowd of more than 15,000 had assembled was attended by over 100 Muslim clerics. Blaming ruling parties at the Centre and in UP for the arrests and killings, the speakers criticised Chief Minister Mayawati and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi for indifference towards Muslims. The clerics also decided to actively guide the community in getting its own public representatives, who dont have affiliations to any party. http://www.hindustantimes.com/StoryPage/Print.aspx?Id=33affd71-f795-4077-ae01-a0aac611e8b4 |
