Clashes mar Muharram processions, 30 injured
Express News Service
Posted: Jan 09, 2009

Kolkata/Balia/Godda More than 30 people were injured in Muharram clashes across the country on Thursday. While at least 27 persons, including one policeman, were injured in a communal clash at Midnapore town in West Bengal, five persons, including four children, were injured when unidentified persons triggered a blast at Kargil Chowk in Godda in Jharkhand just before a Muharram procession was to reach there, police sources said.

Shops and a tazia were set on fire in Gonda and Balia districts of Uttar Pradesh during Muharram observance, triggering communal tension. A brawl involving two persons sparked stone-throwing and burning of a few shops at Cahalhari in Gonda, the district’s Additional Superintendent of Police Malik Chandra Saroj said. In Balia, a tazia was allegedly burnt at Chilbara, which flared communal tension in the area, said Additional Superintendent of Police Mahatma Prasad.

Even as tension in Midnapore in West Bengal evened out after imposition of prohibitory orders following clashes in the morning between two groups over the route of a Muharram procession, curfew had to be clamped in the Chak Kasi area of Howrah district in the state when a similar clash resulted in several residences and shops being set on fire. Senior police officers said the incident took place in Chak Kasi Bazar in Gaus Colony under the Bauria police station at around 5.30 pm. District Magistrate Khalil Ahmed said the police had to use tear gas to disperse the mob. The police said a huge contingent had been deployed in the area, including the district combat force and the Rapid Action Force.

Meanwhile in Srinagar, the police detained 20 persons and virtually sealed the heart of the city to foil attempts by the Shia community to take out a Muharram procession defying prohibitory orders. However, massive processions were taken out in other parts of the Valley amid tight security.

800 women terrorists in Pakistani getting trained in Kashmir for attacks in India

Jan. 14: Hundreds of young women are reportedly being trained at several terror camps in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and in Pakistan, Indian as well as American intelligence agencies have confirmed.

Asiya, a 24-year-old Pakistani woman who was recently arrested while trying to sneak across the Line of Control into India, has reportedly revealed during interrogation that several terror camps where women are being trained are in the Bimar, Kotli and Sensa areas of PoK. It is learnt that during interrogation she revealed that a large number of young women “mujahids” were being trained at these camps. America’s FBI, ever since the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States, has directed its field agents to constantly monitor and spy on young Muslim men and women, including American citizens, who have travelled to Pakistan without any good reason.

“There are intelligence inputs that terror camps of the Jaish-e-Mohammad, Lashkar-e-Tayyaba, Hizbul Mujahideen and Al-Badr are located at several places in PoK. We have reports that women are also being trained at these camps to carry out operations in India,” a senior official of the US Central Intelligence Agency was quoted as saying.

“The terror camps are located in Muzaffarabad, Attock, Oghi and Mansera areas of PoK. While the Lashkar training centre is located in Muzaffarabad, the JeM is training new recruits at Attock. Besides, Lashkar has a training camp at Mansera. Al-Badr has its own training centre at Oghi,” the official said, adding that all available inputs indicate that most of those trained at these camps were young women.

The official said that even after renewed Indian and international pressure on Pakistan following the 26/11 attacks on Mumbai, these camps continued to function. Some are even close to major Pakistani cities such as Islamabad-Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Gujranwala and some of Lahore’s outskirts.

Pakistani terrorists using Malaysia as transit point for fake rupees

PAKISTANI terrorists are using Malaysia as a transit point for the movement of counterfeit Indian rupees into India to destabilise the country.

Indian Institute for Defence Studies and Analysis senior researcher Brigadier S.K. Saini said the transfer of fake notes had been going on for some time but had worsened in the last five years.

“The latest incident occurred in October last year when Indian authorities intercepted a large consignment of fake Indian rupees en route from Malaysia to India.”

He declined to state the exact amount involved but said the overall figure from Malaysia and other countries ran into billions of rupees.

Saini said the movement of counterfeit currency continued unchecked despite concerted efforts by Indian and Malaysian authorities.

“The Pakistani elements behind this racket are doing this to create confusion and destabilise India,” he told the New Straits Times.

It is understood that counterfeit rupees are also being smuggled into India from Nepal and Bangladesh.

Saini said the Pakistanis behind the activity were engaging in “economic terrorism” by undermining the buoyant Indian economy.

He said Pakistani terrorists who used to smuggle the counterfeit notes across the Pakistan-India border had stopped doing so because of tighter border controls.

He said the notes were printed in Pakistan, which had equipment to produce high quality fake currency.

Saini said the terrorists’ objective were two-pronged — to undermine the Indian fiscal sector and set up legitimate companies and businesses to fund their terrorist activities in India. He said the fake notes were of such high quality that even experts in India could not tell them apart.

“We are working with the Malaysian authorities on a more concerted basis to put an end to this illegal activity.”

On why Malaysia had been chosen for this activity, he said it was because of the huge number of people travelling between Malaysia and India.

“Malaysia was on our intelligence radar well before the Nov 26 attack by Pakistani terrorist in Mumbai. We are continuing to monitor Malaysia in terms of it being used as transit point for Pakistani terrorists.”

ISI’s micro and macro plan to destabilize India

January 13, 2009 18:53 IST

More proof of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence trying to meddle in India’s affairs has come to light with security agencies seizing two maps from terrorists in the Jammu region.

Intelligence Bureau officials told rediff.com that the maps provided shocking evidence and also pointed to the ISI’s interest in destabilising India, particularly through the northern and western parts of the country. Intercepts picked up by the IB and the revelations by infiltrators suggest that the ISI hopes to accomplish this mission by 2020.

The ISI’s plans are in motion on the western front with assistance from Bangladesh’s intelligence agency Directorate General of Forces Intelligence, the terrorists have revealed.

Southern India is next on the agenda and IB sources reveal that the plan is to destabilise the region by using the modules in Hyderabad and Kerala.

IB sources say while this may only be loud thinking by the ISI, the fact is that they have a plan on hand, two in fact: macro and micro plans.

Experts say when compared to the macro plan, micro planning is extremely dangerous. The macro planning largely involves the Pakistan Army, which will continue to engage security forces on the border so that infiltration into India becomes easier. Interrogation of several terrorists in the Jammu region has also revealed that maps handed over to them are in possession of several members of the army and that these maps are given only to inspire these ultras.

IB sources say that all terror strikes the country has witnessed so far, have been part of the micro planning. It may be aimed at meaningless killings, but the operations are well-defined.

The first step in micro planning seeks to create a communal divide in India. The ISI takes the help of local modules to execute selective but comprehensive violence so that they are able to establish territorial control.

The ISI is not alone in this operation, but has divided this responsibility with the DGFI. While ISI-sponsored modules target Mumbai, Delhi , Gujarat and other areas in north India, the DGFI takes care of areas like West Bengal, Bihar, Assam, Meghalaya and Tripura.

The ISI-sponsored cells would focus more on infiltration in the country and provide logistical support to terror operations. The DGFI, on its part, would have to rally behind it local terror and insurgent groups apart from gathering intelligence.

Saudi Cleric: Girls over 10 or 12 years are eligible for marriage
14 Jan 2009, 1932 hrs IST, AFP

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s senior-most cleric said girls as young as 10 years old can be married, local media reported on Wednesday.

The powerful Grand Mufti Abdul Aziz al-Sheikh said in a speech late on Monday that Islamic Sharia law allows the practice of pre-teen girls getting married, and that critics of the practice were doing the girls “an injustice,” reports said.

“We hear often in the media about the marriage of minors. We must know that Sharia law is not unjust for women,” the cleric is quoted as saying.

“If it is said that a woman below 15 cannot be married, that is wrong. If a girl exceeds 10 or 12 then she is eligible for marriage, and whoever thinks she is too young, then he or she is wrong and has done her an injustice.”

His comment came in the wake of several well-publicized cases of young girls being married to men sometimes old enough to be their great-grandfathers.

On Monday a court in Taif allowed an 11-year-old girl to separate from her 75-year-old husband after the girl’s mother petitioned the court, according to a report in Okaz newspaper. The girl’s father had arranged the marriage in exchange for a dowry, it said.

In December a Saudi court at Unayzah, 220 kilometres (135 miles) north of Riyadh, rejected a plea to divorce an eight-year-old girl married off by her father to a man who is 58, saying the case should wait until the girl reaches puberty.

Saudi human rights groups are fighting the old practice of children being married off to much older men by their parents and seek to establish a legal minimum age for women to be married.
