Madrasa Certification: Seeds of Disaster
Written by Kailash Shashtri

On 30th December 2008, It was reported that the Human Resource Development (HRD) ministry of India is all set to grant madrasa certificates equivalence to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). The move is supposed to bring madrasa students across the country into mainstream and help clear their way to higher education.

On the first glance it looks like a noble cause which may help reduce frustration among the Muslim youth and draw them away from the path of terrorism towards the path of nation building. But is it the case? A closer scrutiny of the plan shows that this may sow seed of disaster which in due time will result in mass scale Islamisation of India.

Today there are two forces working on the Muslims of India, one, the Government of India. The second one being the Islamist forces funded by ISI and Saudi charities who want to spread their brand of Wahabi Islam, the one followed by Taliban and Al Qaeda. Depending on which side has more motivation, it can have a positive effect or a negative effect on the future of India.

If the moderate and progressive forces in the Islamic community and our government have more motivation, they would revise and expand the curriculum of madrasas to include more subjects, so that the madrasa students have more options further in life. These subjects would include computers, sciences and methods of teaching which would make the madrasa children as competitive as the rest.

This scenario is highly unlikely though. Ever since its establishment by the Delhi Sultanate in 1206 AD, reforms in madrasa educational curriculum (MEC) has seen recurrent setbacks due to over emphasis on Arabic literature, Islamic history and obsession with Urdu language. No government would want to touch MEC for the fear of losing votes. Any interference with the MEC is touted by the Islamists as an attack on Islam.

The second scenario comes to play if the orthodox forces are stronger, which according to me is much more likely. There will be no change in the curriculum, but now the Islamist forces funded by Saudi charities will open more madrasa and convince more Muslim parents that madrasa are just as good for their children as the other schools. This won't be the truth, but the parents will be fooled because of this proposed government ruling. Many Muslim students will even switch schools because the Islamist forces will be able to convince the parents that their children as loosing touch with Islam by studying in the non Muslim schools, while there is another option available which will give them equivalent certification as well as Islamic teachings too.

More Muslim youth will graduate from the madrasas who will have no practical skills or a knowledge base to compete in the outside world. What they will have is a false sense assurance that they are at the same level as the rest of the higher secondary pass outs in the country.  This assurance will be quickly shattered when they try to apply for the entrance tests for colleges to pursue higher education. In the merit based system, they will not be able to compete against their better trained and better educated counterparts. They will see non-madarsa students getting into good colleges, while they themselves will find everything in the entrance tests unfamiliar.
Some of them will get admissions in Islamic universities such as Jamia Milia University, Jamia Hamdard and Aligarh Muslim University, because these Universities have up to 80% reservation for Muslims. We can expect to see more such Islamic universities pop up around us. These students will graduate even higher level with sub par skills. They will face the same problems in the merit based, highly competitive job market of emerging India.

Pretty soon, there will be huge number of Muslim youth with certificates and degrees but no jobs. Such young Muslims will see this as a discrimination against them and become increasingly frustrated. Due to their lack of any practical skills, they won't get the jobs which other students can easily get. All this, combined with the Islamist propaganda, will fuel a sense of bias more than ever. And as we have seen time and again, these youth will become a fertile recruiting fields for the likes of SIMI and IM.

The ones who will not fall in the folds of terrorism will go on to do the only job they can do, teaching Islam. More Islamic universities will open to absorb the increasing number of madarsa pass outs. These universities will need more teachers, and they will get readily available teachers in the Islamic university graduates, who are unfit for any other kind of job. Aided by the Saudi money and Islamists working from the streets, this will set up a kind of chain reaction which will grow to take all the new generation Muslims in its fold.

As much as the above scenario is a huge problem in itself, the real problem will come a few years down the line. As a result of ever expanding Islamic education system, there will be an increasing number of Muslim youth unfit for modern and higher paying jobs. The coming census will show that that there is a much higher percent of unemployed Muslim graduates than the unemployed non-Muslim graduate. The statistics will also show that the average income for Muslim graduates is much less than that of the non-Muslim graduates. No one will associate this with the lower education standards of the Islamic education system or lower skill level of Islamic graduates. The pseudo secular politicians will pounce on these statistics, making it their platform for demanding Muslim reservation in Jobs.

Sooner or later, the discrepancy between the statistics will be too great and the voices demanding for reservation will be too loud. Opposing such reservation will be portrayed as an attempt to suppress Muslims, student protests against such reservations will be termed as Hindu terrorism. A few compromises here, and a few coalition exchanges there, the Muslim reservation will become approved.

Once that happens, there will be no stopping the conversion of unemployed and backward Hindus into Islam, just for the purpose of getting an advantage in jobs.

The Islamisation of India and the destruction of the Hindu social system will be well underway and it will be very difficult to stop it at that time.
