Questions have been raised about coverage of Miraj riots by concerned Indians on the Internet: The most sought after Free Media and instrument of Feedom of Speech. The following are reports by two media agencies
Source: SamayLive Mumbai, Sept 10 Maharashtra Government has requested the Centre to ban clippings on a video sharing website, claiming they were responsible for inciting people during the recent violence in Miraj and other towns of western Maharashtra. "DGP A N Roy has written to the Centre, asking it to ban the clippings on the 'www.youtube.com' site which incited people and led to spread of more violence," Home Minister Jayant Patil told reporters here today. The Centre has not responded so far to the request, but Roy would remind them on the issue, Patil said. The Home Minister accused opposition Shiv Sena-BJP of inciting people and garnering 'political mileage', keeping an eye on the October 13 Assembly polls. On the situation in Miraj, Patil said the curfew was released today for immersion of Ganesha idols and processions went off peacefully. Source: Mid-Day Fires of the communal tension in Sangli are being fanned with chillingly efficient use of technology to benefit a community
The Sangli riots have opened a new chapter in the history of communal tension in India. Never before have politicians and anti-social elements used technology so efficiently to instigate and spread riots.
The fire that began with a scene depicting Chhatrapati Shivaji slaying Afzal Khan (see box), was fanned with the circulation of thousands of MMSes and hundreds of CDs of the first episode of clashes. The video was manipulatively shot to show that the police was biased towards the minority community.
Then, various other scenes of the riots were also uploaded on YouTube and other sites for maximum impact.
In a statement issued to VHP Sampark Media Desk, Prof. Vyankatesh Abdeo (Central Joint Secretary of VHP) said "Why have authorities never talked of banning videos of jihadi elements and extremists from Pakistan on the Internet. And only when patriotic concerned Indians do it, It is being questioned as act done by anti-social elements?"
